
Male post-natal depression ‘is the last taboo’
Mark Williams, who suffered from post-natal depression, said he was “trying to keep strong for his wife”, who was diagnosed with post-natal depression after giving birth in December 2004 by caesarean section following a 20-hour labour.
“I think it was looking after someone I really cared for, you know I love my wife to bits and then actually seeing somebody go through that, obviously it is bound to have an impact” said Mr Williams, who started the support group Fathers Reaching Out.
Health professional are meeting in Birmingham to discuss the issue of how fathers are affected by their partner's illness. Research in 2010 suggest one in 28 men are affected themselves by depression following the birth of a child.
