Penrhyn

Penryn Granite Works near the Sierra Nevada Mountains in California was established in the 19th century by the Welsh industrialist Griffith Jenkins Griffith.

It was named after Penrhyn Slate Quarry in north Wales where Griffith once worked. He decided to drop the 'h' in the original name to avoid spelling mistakes.

The area around the quarry has come to be known as Penryn too.

Penrhyn means headland or promontory in Welsh.

The small town of Bae Penrhyn (Penrhyn Bay) is a promontory on the north Wales coast, a stone's throw from Llandrillo-yn-Rhos, from where the intrepid Prince Madog purportedly set sail for America in 1170.

Penrhyn is evident in other notable place names in Wales - Penrhyncoch (red headland), Traeth Penrhyn (Penrhyn beach) and Penrhyndeudraeth (headland of the two beaches). Penrhyn Castle in north Wales is pictured here.
