Doctor Fuambai Ahmada chose to have female genital mutilation at the age of 21 because she was "in awe of the celebrations that surrounded the initiation".
Doctor Ahmada says that she had 'no knowledge' of what the initiation involved prior to the operation. She was raised in Sierra Leone where FGM is a common practise.
This was first broadcast on Commonwealth Breakfast 2 August 2014.
