German soldier: Both sides felt 'the same' about war
A German soldier with a British family says both sides felt “the same” about going to war in 1914.
Lieutenant Colonel Thomas Cremer, a senior German staff officer with a British wife and children, read poems written by a German civilian for a WWI centenary service in the Belgian city of Mons.
He said, "The first text is about the patriotism: everybody wants to go to war and everybody thinks we’re going to win this war in a couple of weeks and go home.”
“In 1918 everybody saw actually, that there’s no real winner.”
