More inmates at a Leicestershire young offenders institution will take their own lives unless staffing levels are increased, a former prison officer claims.

Three prisoners have died in the past 15 months at Glen Parva, which was ruled as "not safe" by the chief inspector of prisons.

David Murray, a retired officer who worked at Glen Parva for 30 years, said the prison was understaffed by 20 and the situation was getting unsafe "day by day".

Ex-prisoner Peter (not his real name), also said conditions were "terrible" and he felt like he was "thrown in a jungle".

The Ministry of Justice said safety was the "top priority" at Glen Parva and "sufficient staffing" levels provided a "safe and decent regime".
