A former ambassador says the "failure" of the Iraqi government is to blame for local people aiding extremist group, the Islamic State (IS).

Siamand Banaa, former Iraqi Ambassador to the Netherlands, said the lack of services and "weak, chaotic and divided" state of the country was encouraging young people "full of vindictiveness and hatred" to join IS.

He said those who had been neighbours to the Yazidi tribe "for centuries" were "the same ones who are killing them, enslaving their women, raping, pillaging and burning".

Mr Banaa has joined calls for the current prime minister, Nouri al-Maliki, to leave his post.
