Vine in 1914: Taking To The Skies
World War 1 was the first conflict in which aircraft were used on a large scale.
With the Wright Brothers having only made the first powered flight as recently as 1903, the technology was still in its infancy. At the start of the war, the planes were used mainly for reconnaissance tasks, with aerial combat not being introduced until 1915.
