British war reporter John Cantlie was abducted in Syria in 2012. Nothing had been heard of his location until last week when a video was released by his captors, Islamic State militants.

Unlike previous videos, the film does not show members of the militant group but instead Mr Cantlie spoke from behind a desk and said IS had been "misrepresented by the Western media".

His friend and colleague, Sunday Times journalist Tim Rayment, said he's "slightly optimistic" that Mr Cantlie will be released unharmed because he is useful to his captors:

"He has qualities that mean if anyone can survive this, it might be John; he is very skilled at bonding with people," said Mr Rayment.

鈥淚t's impossible to imagine the psychology of a man who can cut off another person鈥檚 head but if bonding with your captor is possible, John is the person who might be able to do it."
