Liverpool were given a painful lesson in how far the Champions League has moved on in their absence as they were beaten by holders Real Madrid at Anfield.

Cristiano Ronaldo led Real's charge with a superb opener after 23 minutes and Karim Benzema added two before the interval to leave the hosts facing an exercise in damage limitation.

There was more controversy at half-time as Balotelli swapped shirts with Pepe as he left the pitch. The Italian striker was later substituted.
