Brookwood, Surrey: Britain’s Largest Military Cemetery
Brookwood Military Cemetery was established in 1917 to bury and commemorate war casualties who had died in London’s hospitals.
Few people are aware of the 13,000 commemorative sites across the UK which honour more than 170,000 soldiers. They range from single graves in quiet village churchyards, to the monumental Brookwood Military Cemetery, with more than 5,000 plots.
Across the 37 acre site, row upon row of the now distinctive white headstones stretch as far as the eye can see, arranged in straight lines to signify soldiers on parade.
One hundred years on from the Great War, not everybody will be able to pay their respects at the Western Front memorials or in Flanders Fields.
