Symphonie Fantastique - 4th and 5th movements
Marche au supplice (March to the Scaffold) | Songe d’une nuit du Sabbat (Dreams of a witches’ Sabbath)
Performed by the Orchestre Symphonique Kimbanguiste, with members of the ѿý Symphony Orchestra, ѿý Concert Orchestra, National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain and Southbank Sinfonia conducted by Jamie Phillips.
Symphonie Fantastique composer Hector Berlioz wrote that “instrumentation is to music precisely what colour is to painting”. In the early days, finding the instruments needed for an orchestra in the Congo was tricky for the Orchestre Symphonique Kimbanguiste – a problem they solved by making some of their own using anything and everything they could get their hands on. From hubcaps for bells, to bicycle wires for violin strings, the players have found some ingenious ways to achieve the full instrumental scale of a symphony orchestra.
