Lottery winners: it was the lucky dip that won
This week marks 20 years since the National Lottery handed out its first jackpot.
Since then it’s supported 14 Oscar winning films, funded 90% of Team GB’s medal winners at London 2012 – and made more than 3,600 millionaires, including Nigel and Sharon Mather who won £12.4 million in 2010.
The couple from Sale in Manchester were on holiday at a caravan park in Minehead, Somerset with their two sons when they won - they haven’t holidayed there since.
After the win, Sharon resigned from her job as a finance assistant at Trafford Council and Nigel gave up working as a hotel manager to invest in two businesses instead. The couple also support a number of charities.
Sharon says her numbers were normally birthdays and ages, but it was a lucky dip that won them the money.
