The Latest on Ebola from Sierra Leone and Liberia

Sarah Boseley reports from West Africa on the latest Ebola situation, State-of-the-art telemedicine helping patients in Denmark, How World War One shaped modern anaesthesia.

On Health Check Sarah Boseley sometimes joins Claudia in the studio, but this week she speaks to Claudia on a phone line from Liberia. Sarah is in West Africa reporting on the latest Ebola situation and has spent the last few days in Liberia and Sierra Leone.

Danish virtual clinic
The European Union has signalled it believes telemedicine - using communications technology to do remote consultations or diagnoses - is the future, by granting four million euros to researchers perfecting technology that will help patients take part in online medical consultations. The system is expected to be rolled out across the Danish Health Service within three years, and across the union not long thereafter. An advanced trial is already underway in Denmark, from where the ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½s Malcolm Brabant reports.

WW1 Anaesthesia
A hundred years ago the First World War was underway and as so often happens in war, there were some extraordinary medical advances, particularly in the field of anaesthesia. They are the subject of a new exhibition entitled "A silver lining through the dark clouds shining", which is currently on at the Anaesthesia Heritage Centre in London. Claudia was taken around it by Dr Andrew Hartle, consultant anaesthetist at St. Mary's hospital, London, and president of The Association of Anaesthetists of Great Britain and Ireland.

***The above edition of the programme states that Dr Andrew Hartle is president of 'The Association of Anaesthetists of Great Britain and Northern Ireland', however its correct name is 'The Association of Anaesthetists of Great Britain and Ireland.***
