The promise of a better life in Europe is luring a growing tide of desperate migrants fleeing war, repression and poverty in the Middle East and the Horn of Africa. Two boats with hundreds of people have been abandoned by traffickers within a week, and Europe is struggling to deal with the problem.
We’ll hear some of the migrants’ stories on today’s WHYS, but how should Europe respond? At a time of high unemployment and growing anti-immigrant sentiment, should Europe welcome more migrants as the workforce of the future, or turn away all but genuine asylum-seekers?
