The allegation is startling: police in New York are angry at their Mayor's support for anti-police protests in recent weeks and have decided to ignore all but the most serious offences in their city.
Arrests, parking tickets, traffic summonses are down by as much as 90 per cent. The NYPD seems to be working to rule.
The most visible sign of the dispute has been police turning their backs on the Mayor at the funerals of two officers shot in their patrol car recently. That protest was criticised last night by the Police Commissioner and the Mayor who called it 'disrespectful to the people of this city'.
