First organ transplant from newborn in the UK
For the first time, doctors have successfully transplanted organs from a newborn baby. Neither the baby's family nor the organ recipients are being named but we do know the donor was a baby girl who suffered irreparable brain damage in the womb and died when she was just six days old. Her kidneys and cells from her liver were donated to two patients, who are both doing well.
Dr Gaurav Atreja performed the operation and explained why this transplant was such a milestone, he said: "We've imported newborn organs to be transplanted into recipients in the UK but no similar events have happened retrospectively".
