MS sufferer: 'I was down to 22p'
“I was down to 22p” says former accountant Penny Tyas.
Penny was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in 2013. It took around 6 months for her to receive any money and at one point she and her son were surviving on food bank parcels.
She was "one of the first people to apply for PIP" (personal independence payment) but before receiving the money had already "gone bankrupt, been evicted" and had lost her job.
The service is intended to provide financial support for disabled people who face the biggest challenges to remain independent, but has already been labelled by MPs as a “fiasco” following significant delays in processing people’s claims.
