South African golfer Gary Player has paid tribute to Dr Charles 鈥淐harlie鈥� Sifford, who has died aged 92.

A former caddie, Sifford became the first black player in PGA-sanctioned events in 1961 when the "Caucasian-only" membership clause was dropped.

Sifford endured racial slurs and taunts throughout his career, but nevertheless won two PGA Tour events in 1967 and 1969, with many victories prior to his official admission.

Player said, "He was a pioneer. He came through this adversity and he came out, smelling like a rose because he won a major on the senior tour.

鈥淗e never, ever gave up - it was in his nature to keep on fighting."
