Cyril Smith child abuse inquiry 'scrapped' claims 'credible'
ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½ Newsnight has been told a police investigation that uncovered child abuse by the Liberal MP Cyril Smith and a member of the intelligence agencies was scrapped - and the detectives involved told never to speak of the operation again.
Roy Ramm, a former commander of special operations at Scotland Yard, and criminologist and film-maker Roger Graef discussed allegations that the police investigation in the 1980s was stopped by senior officers.
The claims are understood to be among those being investigated by the Independent Police Complaints Commission.
Roy Ramm said "this is a particularly unique situation and I think that must have come through somebody in special branch".
"I think the publicity surrounding this now may well bring police officer who were warned and threatened forward...The threat of the official secrets act has to be removed," he added.
