Adam Sandler film 'racist' says Native American actor
A group of Native American actors have walked off the set of an Adam Sandler comedy, claiming the film is "totally disrespectful" of their culture.
Netflix, which commissioned the film called 'The Ridiculous Six', has responded by saying that it was a "broad satire" intended to send up the stereotypes of Western movies.
"The movie has 'ridiculous' in the title for a reason: Because it is ridiculous," a Netflix statement said.
Native American actress Allison Young is a Navajo and was an extra in the film and one of those who walked off set. She told ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½ 5 live's Dotun Adebayo that the film was so offensive that the cultural advisor also quit.
"Comedies can undermine racial stereotypes rather than perpetuate them," Young said.
"Nothing has changed from the Westerns," she said. "We are still just Hollywood Indians."
