Angela Allen’s Story
Angela lived in Jersey during the occupation, which began soon after the Germans defeated France in 1940. She was a baby.
She was five when she was taken with her little brother to Liberation Square on 9 May 1945. She and her family followed the crowds of people flocking to the sea front to watch the Union Flag being raised from the balcony of the Pomme d'Or Hotel.
Her mother was so taken up with the emotions of the moment that she thrust her baby son into the arms of one of the first British soldiers ashore, so that someone could take a picture of that incredible moment.
