Sound art - more than just noise?
A sound art exhibition opens on Tuesday at London's Morley Gallery, displaying 22 works from emerging artists from Singapore, Russia, Germany, Colombia, Italy, Canada, France, the US and the UK.
Andrea Byrne, a London-based sound artist, won the competition with an entry about 1960s pop singer Twinkle, and the allure and possible consequence of fame.
Mira Calix, an established artist and one of the competition judges, said sound art has various forms of expression, with sound at its heart.
She was adamant the winning entry was more than just badly-mixed music.
“It’s art if the artist says it’s art and it has intention,” said Ms Calix. “You have to think of sound as another material.”
