Heart transplant day: Emotions before surgery
5 live has been following the story of heart transplant patient Stephen Halsey, who received a life-saving operation at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham.
On the morning of the operation, Stephen was told by hospital transplant co-ordinator Laura Grocott that a donor organ was potentially available, and briefed him on what to expect.
Stephen, a father-of-two, said he “still struggles” with the “sad” concept of where the organ is coming from.
However wife, Denise, who was at the hospital with their two sons, said despite “everything”, husband Stephen was on "good form" before his surgery.
