Items from a Shipwrecked Slave Ship
Artefacts from a shipwrecked slave ship have been recovered and have gone on display at the Iziko Museum in Cape Town. The objects were recovered by a joint South African-US team from the Portuguese ship, the Sao Jose-Paquete de Africa, which went down near the Cape of Good Hope in 1794. It is thought that around 400 enslaved people drowned. Iziko museum curator Paul Tichmann tells us about what is known of the events of the wreck.
