The new children鈥檚 laureate says he has created a new superhero alter ego for himself called 鈥楾he Doodler鈥�.

Chris Riddell, who takes over from Malorie Blackman, said he has illustrated all the previous occupants of his job as superheroes.

鈥淚 was really rather nervous when they said would you follow these brilliant people as children鈥檚 laureate,鈥� said Riddell. 鈥淪o I thought I鈥檇 design superhero costumes for them. That鈥檚 my way in - I was thinking visually鈥�.

鈥淎nd then I got to myself. I thought what superhero costume can I wear? I鈥檝e come up with this notion of the Doodler 鈥� a little bit like Batman鈥檚 sidekick Robin,鈥� said Ridell, before adding his special power was 鈥渟electing the right pencil鈥�.
