Children's laureate creates superhero alter ego ‘The Doodler’
The new children’s laureate says he has created a new superhero alter ego for himself called ‘The Doodler’.
Chris Riddell, who takes over from Malorie Blackman, said he has illustrated all the previous occupants of his job as superheroes.
“I was really rather nervous when they said would you follow these brilliant people as children’s laureate,” said Riddell. “So I thought I’d design superhero costumes for them. That’s my way in - I was thinking visually”.
“And then I got to myself. I thought what superhero costume can I wear? I’ve come up with this notion of the Doodler – a little bit like Batman’s sidekick Robin,” said Ridell, before adding his special power was “selecting the right pencil”.
