Female biologist: Science 'still seen as not for girls'

A biologist and teacher has said that science is ""still seen as not for girls"".

Dr Emily Grossman was reacting after a Nobel laureate apologised for any offence he caused after making comments about the "trouble with girls" in science.

Sir Tim Hunt reportedly told a conference in South Korea that women in labs "cry when you criticise them" and "fall in love" with their male counterparts.

He told the ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½ he "did mean" the remarks but was "really sorry".

In response to Tim Hunt's comments, Dr Grossman said: "We are coming from an environment where women have traditionally been seen as not good, and not good enough to do maths and science".

"A lot of girls that I teach still feel that they don't have the confidence to do it", she added.
