Campaigner: China dog meat festival ‘like hell on earth’
An animal rights campaigner has described a Chinese dog meat eating festival as “like hell on earth”.
About 10,000 dogs are slaughtered at the Lychee and Dog Meat Festival in Yulin to mark the summer solstice, according to state media.
Residents and vendors in Yulin say the animals are killed in a humane way. However Julia de Cadenet, who is fighting to get the festival closed down, said the animals suffered “heinous cruelty”.
“[The dogs] are not from farms. They’re strays and stolen pets… selected and slaughtered in front of revellers”.
Yulin city officials have distanced themselves from the gathering.
