An animal rights campaigner has described a Chinese dog meat eating festival as 鈥渓ike hell on earth鈥�.

About 10,000 dogs are slaughtered at the Lychee and Dog Meat Festival in Yulin to mark the summer solstice, according to state media.

Residents and vendors in Yulin say the animals are killed in a humane way. However Julia de Cadenet, who is fighting to get the festival closed down, said the animals suffered 鈥渉einous cruelty鈥�.

鈥淸The dogs] are not from farms. They鈥檙e strays and stolen pets鈥� selected and slaughtered in front of revellers鈥�.

Yulin city officials have distanced themselves from the gathering.
