Actress Sheila Hancock has been driving for sixty three years and has never made a claim, but this year without warning her premium rose from £873 a year to £2,243.
Hancock said she was "appalled" and wrote to the company demanding an explanation. They told her that because she had been involved in two no-blame accidents, she was "more likely to have a proper accident".
But Hancock said the rise is "ludicrous" and "they seem to pluck things out of the air to make up your insurance, it makes no sense."
Hancock said it is a "major blow" for pensioners who might receive a similar rise and don't have access to public transport, and insists it's an issue which "must be looked into".
The insurance company, Admiral, released the following statement: 'We are sorry we couldn't help Ms Hancock with her renewal. The increase in her renewal premium was not due to her age or occupation. It is not in our interest to overcharge our customer, as we would lose profitable business. We want to be able to provide fair and reasonable premiums for all customers who come to us for a quote and we are sorry we can't always be competitive for everyone.'
