Greece seeks "mandate from the people" to stop austerity
Greeks have begun queuing outside banks to withdraw money, fearful that credit controls could be imposed. On Tuesday, June 30, Greece faces a deadline to repay millions of dollars of debt to the IMF - and it won't be able to do that unless it gets a financial bailout from its creditors. The government of prime minister Alexis Tsipras has now said he'll call a referendum to ask the Greek people whether they'll accept the creditors' conditions. Marina Prentoulis is a UK spokesperson for Greece's governing Syriza party, and says that European democracy has been "destroyed" by institutions.
