Chimpanzee hands 'would not be so good at handling guns'

A scientist says new research shows chimpanzees’ hands are more evolved than ours - but they “would not be so good at handling guns”.

Dr Sergio Almecija from Stony Brook University in New York, led a team who discovered the human hand’s configuration has changed very little over time.

“For the case of the hand, our evolution is less so than a chimpanzee”, said Almecija . “That’s just because their primitive condition was really pretty much like ours with a few changes here and there. We have improved our hands to manipulate much better”.

Pushed on whether a Planet Of The Apes scenario could occur with chimpanzees one day using automatic weapons, he added “their hands are not so good at handling guns as they are portrayed in those movies."
