Kellie Maloney on lack of UK market for female fighters
Former boxing promoter Kellie Maloney says despite the rise in popularity of UFC fighter Ronda Rousey, she does not see a market for female fighters in the UK.
It comes after champion boxer Floyd Mayweather resisted calls to face mixed martial arts star Rousey, who was named 2015 Best Fighter at ESPN's annual awards show.
Maloney said Mayweather and Rousey’s backgrounds were too “different” to be comparable, and female fighters did not appeal to UK audiences.
“We’ve never had a female fighter on TV in England. We’ve never had one top the bill,” she said.
“I did try and to promote a female boxer to prove a point," she added. "Every time she was in the ring people actually left the arena."
