Hacienda DJ: 'Living for the weekend is never going to die'
A DJ who played at the Hacienda over 450 times says “living for the weekend is never going to die” despite nearly half of the UK's nightclubs shutting their doors in last 10 years.
The number of clubs in the UK has gone down from 3,144 clubs in 2005 to 1,733 in 2015.
Dave Haslam, author of "Life After Dark: A History of British Nightclubs & Music Venues", said the recession could be responsible for a change in nightlife behaviour.
“I think a lot of people save up their music experience for the summer”, said Haslam. “So they go to music festivals which are booming. People still go to Ibiza for a fortnight. I think people have stopped going to some of the big commercial clubs."
“I don’t think cheap drinks, wall to wall David Guetta records and playing the same stuff everyone else plays is enough. Night club owners might have to think a bit harder. The Djs might have to work bit harder,” he added.
