The head of the European Union's police agency, Rob Wainwright, said police in Europe would have a better chance of catching migrant smugglers if there were more 鈥渆ffective鈥� border controls in place.

Europol said it's working urgently with national law enforcement agencies to catch the human smugglers responsible for trafficking the 71 migrants who died in a lorry in Austria last week.

Mr Wainwright said a major problem is the criminal groups, who have "no mercy" when smuggling migrants.

He admitted 鈥渆ffective border controls鈥� would help catch more smugglers.
