Fertility treatment pioneer Professor Robert Winston claims some companies are "overcharging" couples who are struggling to conceive.

He says IVF is too often recommended when there may be many more treatments which are 鈥渇ar more successful and far less expensive鈥�.

Professor Winston says the cost for one cycle of IVF treatment can vary from 拢1,000 to 拢11,000.

During in vitro fertilisation or IVF, an egg is removed from the woman's ovaries and fertilised with sperm in a laboratory. The fertilised egg is then returned to the woman's womb.

Professor Winston said it is 鈥渂ad medicine鈥� for a doctor to suggest that a woman should try IVF, without testing for a 鈥減roper diagnosis鈥� which explains the medical reason they鈥檙e unable to conceive.
