Robert Winston: People get 'shunted into' IVF
Fertility treatment pioneer Professor Robert Winston claims some companies are "overcharging" couples who are struggling to conceive.
He says IVF is too often recommended when there may be many more treatments which are “far more successful and far less expensive”.
Professor Winston says the cost for one cycle of IVF treatment can vary from £1,000 to £11,000.
During in vitro fertilisation or IVF, an egg is removed from the woman's ovaries and fertilised with sperm in a laboratory. The fertilised egg is then returned to the woman's womb.
Professor Winston said it is “bad medicine” for a doctor to suggest that a woman should try IVF, without testing for a “proper diagnosis” which explains the medical reason they’re unable to conceive.
