Kamikaze victim's son: 'It was very emotional'
David Hinkins’ father died a war hero, he put his life on the line to save the lives of his shipmates in the face of a terrifying suicide mission by Japanese kamikaze pilots who were attacking his ship in the middle of the Pacific Ocean.
Seventy years later, David travelled to Japan to make peace with Muneyoshi Kuroshi, the brother of the pilot who killed his father.
He said it was a “very emotional” experience and strange to step foot in a “land of people that had previously been enemies”.
Muneyoshi’s brother wrote a poem before he took off on the plane that killed him and David’s father, after he read it aloud David said “it’s a moment I’ll always remember” because “everybody was in tears”.
