Chair of Sport Wales: Rugby vs football comment ‘deliberately controversial’
Laura McAllister, the chair of Sport Wales, said the comment she made about Welsh rugby vs Welsh football was “deliberately controversial”.
At the Hay Festival earlier this year, McAllister said that it would “do more for Wales” if the Welsh national football team qualify for France, than if the rugby team lift the World Cup next month.
She said she’s not “downgrading the status of rugby”, but suggesting there should not be a “destructive rivalry” between the two sports.
McAllister also said that Wales should concentrate on other sports to “diversify its global image” and added that football is a “more widely played sport” in Wales than rugby.
