Rainbow Warrior skipper: I 'accept' apology from bomber
The Rainbow Warrior skipper Pete Willcox says he's "accepted" the apology from the French agent but claims the story of the bombing "just doesn’t add up".
The skipper of the Greenpeace flagship Rainbow Warrior - which was bombed in 1985 - says he has "accepted" the apology from the French intelligence agent who led the deadly attack, but with misgivings.
Pete Willcox said he has "no doubt that his apology is genuine, and I have accepted it - but the story for me just doesn't add up".
"I think personally that they were not just incompetent, but indifferent to the amount life lost on the ship," he said. "If the bomb had gone off half an hour earlier, we would easily have lost half a dozen people".
The Rainbow Warrior was mined to stop Greenpeace protests against French nuclear tests - and it resulted in the death of photographer Fernando Pereira.
After being tracked down by a New Zealand reporter, French agent Jean-Luc Kister apologised for the first time for his actions.
Mr Kister told TVNZ that it was not the aim of his team to kill anybody and that he wanted to say sorry to the family of Pereira, to Greenpeace members on board the vessel and to the people of New Zealand.
