'I'll never forget Rooney call' says ex-Everton director
The former director of Everton's Youth Academy says he'll "never forget" the phone call he got from the scout who spotted an eight-year-old Wayne Rooney.
Ray Hall spoke after Rooney became England's all-time leading goal scorer, taking his international tally to 50 goals - beating Sir Bobby Charlton's 47-year-old record.
"Bob [Pendleton] contacted me and said Ray you need to come down and watch a young boy that's playing at the local fields," Ray said.
"So I went down thinking I'd be only head of youth down there and it was like a who's who. There must have been about 20 from clubs from all over the place."
Ray added that he'd "never seen" a talent like Rooney and he asked him and his family to come in and sign for the club before local rivals Liverpool could pounce.
