'We didn't get who we wanted, you'll have to come back'
David de Gea is not the only footballer to have been on the verge of a move, only to return to the training ground with his tail between his legs.
Sam Allardyce recalls telling Carlton Cole that he could not leave West Ham, despite him being on the verge of signing for West Brom.
The Hammers had been hopeful of signing Emmanuel Adebayor, but the deal fell through at the last minute.
"We thought we were going to get Emmanuel Adebayor on loan and Carlton (Cole) wanted to go to West Brom," Allardyce said speaking to George Riley.
"But at the last minute before the window shut, we couldn't get Adebayor for whatever reason."
"It was my job to pick the phone up and tell Carlton he couldn't go - the air went blue. We exchanged some very explicit words to each other."
