How well do you know your toes?
Most people can't tell which of their toes is being tickled when they have their eyes closed, according to an experiment conducted by Dr Nella Dr Nela Cicmil, a neuroscientist at the University of Oxford.
In the experiment, participants were asked to close their eyes whilst testers gently prodded each toe or each finger and asked the patients to identify which digit was being stimulated. The results confirmed that people find it harder to distinguish between their toes than their fingers.
5 live Breakfast's Rachel Burden conducted the experiment on Nicky Campbell and George Riley. Both presenters managed to identify when their big toes were being touched, but struggled to identify the middle three.
Dr. Cicmil said the results from the experiment are important because doctors can "compare patients and see whether or not their [levels of sensitivity] are worse than normal".
