Report: 'Fraud costing NHS up to £5.7bn a year'
The NHS in England could be losing up to £5.7 billion a year because of fraud, according to new report.
Former Department of Health counter-fraud expert, Professor Jim Gee, helped produce the report for PKF Littlejohn.
"The figure isn't just a global figure, we’ve broken it down into six areas of NHS expenditure and three areas of patient charge income," he said.
Professor Gee said £300 million a year was lost to people falsely claiming free prescriptions, but "that palls into insignificance compared to some of the other areas of expenditure where there are bigger losses."
The Department of Health said it didn't recognise the figures and was focusing resources on working out where future fraud might happen.
