Sir John Kirwan: Why the Haka is so important to me
Rugby legend Sir John Kirwan discusses what the ‘Haka’, the traditional ancestral war cry of the Māori people of New Zealand, means to himself and the All Blacks.
Sir John, who scored 143 points in 63 matches for the All Blacks in the 1980s and 1990s, said for him the Haka is a direct connection between himself and his late father.
“My father passed away five years ago ... When I do the Haka, I am respecting everything that has gone before me," he said. “I can show respect to my father by doing it properly."
“Every one of those All Blacks will have their little story to show respect,” he added.
