The front line of diabetic emergencies
Professor Andy Levy kept an audio diary for 5 live whilst on rounds, in which he encounters several diabetic emergencies including a woman who he says is "lucky to survive".
A Bristol professor dealing with diabetic emergencies every day has told 5 live he is seeing an increase in acute hospital admissions due to the condition. Professor Andy Levy, who is Professor of Endocrinology at the University of Bristol, got in touch with ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½ Radio 5 live to share how difficult life can be for diabetes sufferers.
Professor Levy has kept an audio diary for 5 live whilst on his hospital rounds, in which he encounters several diabetic emergencies including a woman with complications including losing her sight, who he says is "lucky to survive".
Diabetes costs the NHS nearly £10bn a year - 10% of the entire NHS budget. Diabetes UK says there are 3.9 million people living with diabetes in the UK and the last decade has seen a 60% jump in cases in England and Wales.
The most common type is type 2, which is closely associated with lifestyle and obesity. There are currently 5 million people in England at high risk of developing Type 2 diabetes. Diabetes UK has warned that treating the condition threatens to bankrupt the NHS.
