A former producer of The Simpsons says "the world has gotten a much better perspective" on same sex relationships, as reports suggest Smithers will finally come out as gay to Mr Burns.

The relationship between the pair has been a big part of the show throughout its 27 seasons.

Executive Producer Al Jean says Smithers is tired of the power plant boss not appreciating him and "considers his options."

Emmy Award-winning Bill Schultz, who worked on the show for seven seasons, told 5 Live "I think taking a character and finding something new to share with the audience is what it's all about for the staff of The Simpsons."
