The science advisor for The X-Files told 5 live that she had an "open mind" about alien life and believed it would be found in "some form".

Doctor Anne Simon, Professor of Molecular Genetics at the University of Maryland, said "it's not going to be the little green men that people think of, but I think we are going to find some form of microscopic life".

The scientist said the writer of The X-Files, Chris Carter "loves science but he doesn't know a great deal about it" and asked her to assist him in the more technical parts of his scripts.

"I help with what experiments Doctor Dana Scully can do, what she would say and which scientists she would consult with".

X-Files fans will also be pleased to hear news that the conspiracy from the original series will also be addressed: "We're going to learn a lot about the conspiracy from the original series, it all comes to light".

The X-Files is returning to our screens with new episodes in January 2016 after a break of 13 years.
