The earliest ever arrival of a Bewick Swan in the UK is seen as a sign of a long cold winter in Europe. Thousands of the swans migrate every year from Russia, but normally not until a lot later. Julia Newth, from the Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust at Slimbridge in Gloucester, explained.
