Warnock: ‘Barkley can’t defend’
Neil Warnock believes that Ross Barkley’s game has one major flaw….he can’t defend.
Former Leeds and Crystal Palace boss Neil Warnock claims that England attacking midfielder Ross Barkley’s game has one major flaw… he can’t defend.
Warnock believes that this could lead to England being punished against better teams, and admits that national manager Roy Hodgson has a problem: “The fans will be wanting him (Barkley)… but Roy’s a manager that goes into a game not wanting to lose”.
The Everton player, who had a short loan spell at Leeds in 2013 when Warnock was manager there, has sparked comparisons with Paul Gascoigne following his recent performances for his country, scoring in the 3-0 win over Lithuania in their final Euro 2016 qualifying match.
Asked if Barkley could be coached to defend better, Warnock remarks “I don’t think you can”, but praised him by saying “you can’t coach the positives he has either. You’ve got to get him in an area where he can win us the game, because we haven’t got enough people like that.”
