How tough birds thrive on rotting flesh
Scientists in South Korea sequencing the genome of the cinereous vulture say they have discovered specific genes which allow the birds to enjoy their diet of rotting flesh and stay healthy. The genes give the scavenging animals an extremely acidic stomach and a powerful immune system. The report's lead author, Professor Jong Bhak, says the genes identified could be useful in protecting humans against infection.
