Jackie Stewart on whether Lewis Hamilton can match titles
Sir Jackie Stewart speaks to Jennie Gow about the possibility of Lewis Hamilton鈥檚 third world title, and equalling his national record
Sir Jackie Stewart speaks to Jennie Gow about the possibility of Lewis Hamilton winning a third world title, which would see him equal Stewart鈥檚 record for a British driver.
鈥淔or Lewis to join me with three world titles - and he will go on and win another 鈥 I celebrate it rather than cry over it,鈥 said Stewart 鈥 champion in 1969, 1971 and 1973.
Hamilton, who won the title in 2008 and 2014, needs to beat team-mate Nico Rosberg by two points and four-time world champion Sebastian Vettel by nine in order to clinch the title at this weekend鈥檚 US Grand Prix. Victory would also see him become the first British driver to retain his title.
When asked why the British public don鈥檛 appear as enamoured with Hamilton as they do other British athletes, Stewart responds: 鈥淚t takes time for the public to fall in love鈥 you don鈥檛 earn it in five minutes. Five-minute wonders aren鈥檛 long-term success stories. Britain is always proud of its champions and I don鈥檛 think Lewis Hamilton will be any different. He will be well honoured, well recognised and well applauded.鈥
