‘Dad died after a routine operation'

James Hartley, 79 from Yorkshire died after a routine hernia operation at a private clinic. His son, Richard said "he was young at heart and enjoying life".

James Hartley from Yorkshire died after a routine hernia operation carried out at a private hospital. He was an NHS patient but was given the option of going to the privately run Yorkshire Clinic in Bingley. After complications he was transferred to a local NHS hospital where he later died.

His son Richard believes his father's case raises a serious issue. "There's a big question mark over the hospital's ability to deal with the crisis. Do they have the back up to deal with this type of emergency?â€

A recent report by the think-tank, the Centre for Health and Public Interest, estimates that around 6,000 patients a year are admitted to the NHS from private hospitals. Around 2,500 of these transfers are emergencies.

Ramsay Healthcare who run The Yorkshire Clinic say Mr Hartley's death was an isolated incident that should not have happened. They added: "a number of action plans have been put in place to ensure that this does not happen again."

NHS Partners Network which represents private providers who deal with NHS patients told the ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½: "the overwhelming majority of NHS care delivered by independent sector hospitals is safe, efficient and of excellent quality".
